China food scandal: Rat meat sold as lamb

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese police have broken up a criminal ring accused of taking meat from rats and foxes and selling it as lamb in the country’s latest food safety scandal.

The Ministry of Public Security released results of a three-month crackdown on food safety violators, saying in a statement that authorities investigated more than 380 cases and arrested 904 suspects.

Among those arrested were 63 people who allegedly ran an operation in Shanghai and the coastal city of Wuxi that bought fox, mink, rat and other meat that had not been tested for quality and safety, processed it with additives like gelatin and passed it off as lamb.

The meat was sold to farmers’ markets in Jiangsu province and Shanghai, it said.

Despite years of food scandals — from milk contaminated with an industrial chemical to the use of industrial dyes in eggs — China has been unable to clean up its food supply chain.

The announcement came as China’s top court on Friday issued guidelines calling for harsher punishment for making and selling unsafe food products in the latest response to tainted food scandals that have angered the public.

The Supreme People’s Court said the guidelines will list as crimes specific acts such as the sale of food excessively laced with chemicals or made from animals that have died from disease or unknown causes.

China’s penal code, which forbids unsafe and poisonous food, does not specify what acts are considered in violation of the law.

Mother finds bloody heroine needle in loaf of bread

A Manchester, UK mother was horrified to find a used heroin needle in a loaf of bread she’d purchased from a local Tesco store, the Telegraph reported.

While making her 10-year-old son a sandwich, the woman discovered a dirty needle had been pushed through the loaf’s plastic wrapper. “Alarmed and distressed,” she notified authorities, who used DNA tracing to link the blood-stained syringe to David Rodgers, 61, of Salford, UK.bloody needle

The 61-year-old pleaded guilty on Tuesday in Manchester City Magistrates’ Court to contaminating the bread with intent to cause public alarm. He said he’d hidden the needle in the Tesco Extra loaf after getting his heroin fix on December 1.

Rodgers claimed he did so out of desperation, to prevent his wife from finding out he was using the drug again. Court was adjourned for pre-sentence reports, and Rodgers was told he could face jail time, the Daily Mail reported.

“It’s hard to believe what I did being a father and grandad,” he told police.

Dominic Geelan, the prosecutor, stated that Rodgers did not have a particular grudge against Tesco, a major supermarket chain in the UK. The store’s spokesperson added that they were working closely with police throughout the investigation.

Football coach, allegedly shot sex videos of his own young kids

MSU-Mankato head football coach Todd Hoffner faces two felony charges after he allegedly shot pornographic videos of his three young children on a university-issued cell phone.

The phone, which Hoffner turned over to the school for repairs earlier this month because it wasn’t working properly, contained three video of his children — ages 9, 8, and 5 — in various stages of undress, according to a police report. An IT worker who was transferring data from the defective phone to a computer saw the videos, was alarmed, and contacted his supervisor. Eventually, the footage was turned over to the Mankato Police Department, and Hoffner was arrested Tuesday.

A one-minute video created on June 26 showed the three children, one boy and two girls, with their backs to the camera and covered by towels, the complaint said. They drop the towels and turn toward the camera, exposing themselves. The boy allegedly fondles himself and the girls allegedly bend over and expose their anuses to the camera.

A much shorter video showed the girls dancing naked before the boy enters wearing only a football helmet, according to the complaint. The third video, about two minutes long, allegedly shows one of girls being woken at night by a male and told to go to the bathroom. After the girl gets up, the camera focuses in on the back side of her underwear, the complaint said.

Hoffner’s attorney, Jim Fleming, said he’ll fight the charges, telling reporters yesterday that the videos show nothing more than “private family moments.”

Hoffner, 46-years-old and married, posted $40,000 bail and will remain free without conditions until his next hearing, which is scheduled for August 30. He’s been charged with one count of using minors in a sexual performance or pornographic work, and one count of possessing child pornography.

Hoffner was escorted off the practice field last Friday and placed on paid administrative leave, meaning the 2009 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference coach of the year will continue to receive his $101,000 salary for the time being.

Man Who Performed Oral Sex on Female Horse, Convicted

Jeremy Johnson, a 20-year-old Buffalo Township man accused of breaking into a barn and performing oral sex on a horse, pleaded guilty in Perry County Court this morning to defiant trespass and sexual intercourse with an animal.

He was sentenced to 2.5 years of probation, according to the Patriot News.

On May 2, 2012, State police in Perry County reported that a Newport man had broken into a barn early that day and performed oral sex on a female horse.

The break-in occurred around 1:00 a.m. at the Outlaw Stables barn on Cold Storage Road in Centre Township. The trooper who responded said Johnson told him he had been job-hunting at the barn earlier and didn’t realize the time. He told the trooper that he’d been at the barn for an hour and that he’d “licked a horse,” police reported.

Johnson’s attorney, Barbara L. Wevodau, said at that time that prosecutors would have to prove Johnson broke into the Outlaw Stables barn with the intent to sexually violate the female horse.

In a May 8 update, the Patriot News reported that, when police were called regarding the break-in on May 2, the barn owner told them “one of her employees called her after allegedly finding Johnson in the stables after the barn’s alarms went off.” According to police, Johnson told the barn owner he’d had sex with a horse.

On August 9, Johnson, of the 1100 block of Meadowgrove  Road, was arraigned before District Judge Michael Schechterly and  entered a plea of guilty to defiant trespass and sexual intercourse with a horse. As part of his conviction, Johnson was also ordered to have a mental health evaluation.

“I think there is some mental health issue here,” Perry County D.A. Charles “Chad” Chenot said. “There’s got to be something wrong with someone who does something like this.” He told the Patriot-News it’s one of the more bizarre cases he’s ever prosecuted.

Johnson’s lawyer, Barbara Wevodau, refused comment.
