WTF?: Texas HS planning million dollar Jumbotron

As reported by the Morning Valley Star, and brought to Prep Rally’s attention by MaxPreps, Weslaco ISD director of instructional television Steve Valdez has proposed building a 27-by-48-foot jumbotron, a construction development that would give Weslaco the largest prep sports scoreboard in the nation.

“They say that football in Texas is king, so we doubt that anybody else in the country would have anything larger,” Valdez told the Valley Star.

The massive, 43-foot screens that have been installed by fellow Texas schools Katy (Texas) High and Carthage (Texas) High currently hold the record for largest prep scoreboard (Carthage’s is technically larger than Katy’s), but both would easily be eclipsed by the proposed 48-foot jumbotron put forth by Valdez.

The Weslaco School Board plans to vote on the enormous scoreboard at its next meeting, with a proposed funding plan set forth by Valdez paying off the new expanded scoreboard in 10 years. The additional funds to pay for the scoreboard and its subsequent installation would come from more available sponsorship space along the side of the new scoreboard.

Naturally, the additional funds Valdez’s plan relies on assumes both continued interest in the scoreboard advertising opportunities and a similar rate for those advertisements. Those within the Weslaco ISD told the Valley Star that there is a rolling waiting list of 2-3 advertisers to earn a spot on the scoreboard. Maintenance of current rate pricing is more of a leap of faith, though there would stand to be at least as good a chance of rate increases as decreases, potentially earning the district more money than the cost of construction over the next decade.

China food scandal: Rat meat sold as lamb

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese police have broken up a criminal ring accused of taking meat from rats and foxes and selling it as lamb in the country’s latest food safety scandal.

The Ministry of Public Security released results of a three-month crackdown on food safety violators, saying in a statement that authorities investigated more than 380 cases and arrested 904 suspects.

Among those arrested were 63 people who allegedly ran an operation in Shanghai and the coastal city of Wuxi that bought fox, mink, rat and other meat that had not been tested for quality and safety, processed it with additives like gelatin and passed it off as lamb.

The meat was sold to farmers’ markets in Jiangsu province and Shanghai, it said.

Despite years of food scandals — from milk contaminated with an industrial chemical to the use of industrial dyes in eggs — China has been unable to clean up its food supply chain.

The announcement came as China’s top court on Friday issued guidelines calling for harsher punishment for making and selling unsafe food products in the latest response to tainted food scandals that have angered the public.

The Supreme People’s Court said the guidelines will list as crimes specific acts such as the sale of food excessively laced with chemicals or made from animals that have died from disease or unknown causes.

China’s penal code, which forbids unsafe and poisonous food, does not specify what acts are considered in violation of the law.

Teacher fired for allegedly sending students to flush his urine

The state education commissioner on Tuesday approved Paterson Public Schools’ request to fire a second grade teacher from School 13 who was accused of having students carry plastic bottles of his urine to flush in the boys’ room.

The teacher, Ron S. Tuitt, also was accused of urinating in a classroom waste basket, directing students to go on personal errands for him, improperly driving students home and sending inappropriate emails to parents.

In a case that has dragged on for more than two years, Commissioner Christopher Cerf revoked Tuitt’s tenure, ending a Paterson teaching career that started in 1996.

Tuitt uses a wheelchair because he suffers from a condition that causes his legs to swell and makes it difficult for him to walk. The president of the city’s teachers union said Tuitt was being treated unfairly, largely because the former principal at School 13, Michelle James, didn’t like him because he was popular with students.

“This should have never happened to Ron Tuitt,’’ said the union president, Peter Tirri. “It’s absurd for him to go through all this and lose his job.’’tuitt

Tirri said a doctor had determined that Tuitt could continue to work as a teacher, despite his disability, if the school made certain accommodations for him, such as assigning him to a classroom near the elevator.

“One by one, the principal took away all the accommodations and made it more and more difficult for him to deal with his situation,’’ said Tirri.

But city school official praised Cerf’s decision. “I’m happy the commissioner upheld this,’’ said School Board President Christopher Irving. “We put our trust in this man to teach our children and he put them in a very unhealthy educational environment.’’

On March 1, a state administrative law judge issued a ruling in the tenure case against Tuitt upholding most of the 17 charges that the school district brought against the teacher.

The judge, Evelyn Marose, said in her ruling that the teacher had purchased a plastic urine bottle and, “On numerous occasions during the 2006–2007 school year, Mr. Tuitt asked his students to close their eyes and keep them closed, without peeking.’’

The judge wrote that one student peeked and “saw Mr. Tuitt put the urine bottle by his pants and saw Mr. Tuitt put his hands in his pants.  After Mr. Tuitt told the children they could open their eyes, Mr. Tuitt directed D.S. (another student) to take the bottle into which he had urinated, handle first, from Mr. Tuitt’s hands.” A custodian saw the students taking the urine bottles to the boys’ room two to three times per week for more than a year, said the ruling.

That conduct, the judge ruled, “was inappropriate and unprofessional and constitutes conduct unbecoming a teaching staff member.”

Other charges focused on the events of September 29, 2009, when the judge determined that Tuitt “released urine in and around a trash can in his classroom with three students and Custodian Alva nearby outside the classroom door.”

“Custodian Alva saw Mr. Tuitt, standing next to the trash can with his hand on the wall, in a position that caused her to believe that he was urinating in the garbage can,’’ reads the judge’s ruling.  “When Mr. Tuitt exited the classroom, Custodian Alva went into the classroom.  She saw a substantial amount of urine in the trash can, with spillage on the rim and plastic in the trash can and on the floor surrounding the trash can.  Mr. Tuitt did not clean the urine prior to exiting the school for the day and did not contact any one about the urine in the classroom, to ensure that it was cleaned up.

After Truitt was placed on administrative leave in November 2010, the teacher sent emails to two students’ parents, according to the ruling.

The judge quoted one of Truitt’s emails as saying, “This school year has been ruined because our principal hates my guts and believes that fat, unattractive disabled people should be picked upon and drummed out of teaching dispute a career long record of excellence.”

It was determined that “making this statement in an email to a parent is inappropriate and unprofessional and constitutes conduct unbecoming a teaching staff member.”

Florida officer fired for having Trayvon Martin shooting targets

Officials confirmed Saturday that a Florida policeman accused of bringing Trayvon Martin targets in for shooting practice was fired.

Port Canaveral Sgt. Ron King was terminated from the police department on Friday, according to Interim Chief Executive Officer John Walsh.

trayvon martin target“Whether his act was hatred or stupidity, none is tolerable,” Mr. Walsh told WFTV. “He had a target in the back of his car and offered it to two other officers with the port.”

It’s undetermined if any of the targets were actually used. Mr. Walsh told reporters the sergeant purchased the targets on the Internet.

“Using a dead child’s image as target practice is reprehensible,” Benjamin L. Crump, an attorney for the Martin family, said in a statement.

King couldn’t be immediately reached for comment.

In February 2012, Martin, 17, was shot and killed in Sanford, Florida, by George Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch captain who is awaiting trial on a second-degree murder charge in Martin’s death.

Martin family attorney Ben Crump condemned the use of the targets.

“It is absolutely reprehensible that a high-ranking member of the Port Canaveral Police, sworn to protect and serve Floridians, would use the image of a dead child as target practice,” Crump said in a statement. “Such a deliberate and depraved indifference to this grieving family is unacceptable.”

Walsh said the Canaveral Port Authority plans to apologize to the Martin family.

King brought two of the targets to a firearms training session on April 4 at the Brevard Community College campus in Cocoa, Florida, CNN affiliate WFTV reported.

King, who bought the targets on the Internet, and other officers at the training site were on duty at the time, the affiliate said. Port officials said King had been employed at the police department since January 2011, the affiliate said.

A Texas man committed suicide in jail after he was arrested for having sex with a horse. Andrew Mendoza, who is 29-years-old, of Wharton County, Texas, was jailed after he allegedly had sex with a horse.

According to reports, Mendoza allegedly admitted to investigators that he had sex with the horse as he was trying to get the animal pregnant. While many see it as animal abuse, Mendoza, might have seen it as a science according to reports. Mendoza also told investigators that he planned to get the horse pregnant, hoping the encounter would produce a “horseman baby.”

According to the Sheriff’s Office in Wharton County, Mendoza explained that he decided to have sex with the horse after his girlfriend stood him up. They were supposed to go out on a date but she never called. mugshots

During an interview with police, Mendoza said that he was waiting to hear from his girlfriend, when he decided that if she did not call him he will have sex with a horse. Mendoza went ahead and put his plan into action after the woman never called. He then went on to explain how he did it: “I got into my neighbor’s pen with the horse. I dumped out the water bucket and put it upside down and put it behind the horse. The horse did not move it just stood there, I guess the horse liked it,” Mendoza said according to report.

Mendoza was booked into the county jail and charged with public lewdness and criminal trespass. He was sentenced to four months in prison. But before he could finish his sentence, Mendoza committed suicide by hanging himself in his jail cell.

Some UK Lasagna found to be 60% Horse meat (WTF)

Some beef lasagna products recalled from British stores contained more than 60 percent horsemeat, U.K. food safety authorities announced Thursday. It was the latest revelation in a growing scandal surrounding the use of horsemeat and the mislabeling of meat products in Europe.

Frozen-food company Findus recalled the beef lasagna meals earlier this week after French supplier Comigel raised concerns that the products didn’t “conform to specification.” The U.K. Food Standards Agency said the lasagnas were tested as part of an ongoing investigation into mislabeled meat.

Already this month, millions of burgers have been taken off shop shelves as it emerged that beef products from three companies in Ireland and Britain contained horse DNA.

meat-Italian-Lasagna-meatEighteen beef lasagna products were tested by Findus, which found that 11 contained horsemeat in the 60 to 100 percent range, the Food Standards Agency said. It would not say if any of the meals were 100 percent horsemeat.

The agency said there’s no evidence of a food safety risk, but added that tests have been ordered on the lasagna to see if it contains the veterinary drug phenylbutazone. Animals treated with phenylbutazone are not allowed to enter the food chain because it may pose a risk to human health, the agency added.

People who had purchased the meals were advised not to eat them but to return the products to the shops they were bought.

Eating horsemeat is not regarded as a health risk, but the recent incidents have triggered disgust in Britain and Ireland, where horsemeat is not traditionally eaten. They also have raised fears over food security and labeling along the supply chain.
